What makes an engagement ring "estate"?

Estate simply means previously owned. Some estate rings are genuinely antique, others are only a few years old. What they share is that each one is essentially unique, so when a ring sells we cannot order another like it.

Are estate engagement rings a good value?

Often yes. You are getting hand craftsmanship and detail work that would be expensive to reproduce today without paying for new manufacture. Older diamond cuts also tend to price differently than modern ones, which sometimes works in your favor.

Is the ring inspected before you sell it?

Yes. Every estate ring is evaluated by our team before it goes into the case, prongs and settings are checked, and anything needing repair or restoration is addressed first. We have been doing this in Troy for 78 years and we do not put out what we would not stand behind.

Can an estate ring be resized?

Accepted Answer

Most can, within a reasonable range. Rings with intricate engraving, eternity-style settings, or fragile older shanks need more care and occasionally cannot be sized. Bring the ring to the counter and we will tell you exactly what is possible before any work begins.

What is an old European or old mine cut?

These are diamond cuts used before modern faceting standards, cut by hand for candlelight rather than electric light. They typically have a smaller table, a higher crown, and a softer, chunkier sparkle than a modern brilliant. Many people prefer that character once they see it in person.

Can I keep the stone but change the setting?

Yes, and it is a common request. If you love the diamond but want a different look, we can design a new setting around it, or restore and modify the original. Our custom design team will walk you through both paths.

Do estate rings come with certification?

Accepted Answer

Some do and some do not, since older stones were frequently sold before independent grading became standard. We evaluate every diamond ourselves and will tell you exactly what documentation comes with a specific ring.
