About John Hardy
Harris Jeweler carries John Hardy in Troy, Ohio.
The company began in 1975, when Canadian artist John Hardy traveled to Bali and stayed. What he found there was a living metalworking tradition, techniques for weaving and hammering silver that had been passed from master to apprentice across generations and were in danger of disappearing as the world industrialized. Rather than import the designs and manufacture them elsewhere, he built the workshop in Bali and employed the artisans who already held the knowledge.
That decision still defines the brand. John Hardy pieces are made by hand in Indonesia, each one signed by the artisan who made it, and the company has kept an active commitment to sustainable practice and to the community its workshop sits in.
The collection is best known for the woven Classic Chain, built link by link in a technique that takes considerable time to learn, and the dragon-inspired Naga line drawn from Balinese mythology. Most of it is heavily textured sterling silver, often with gold accents.
It is a distinctly different look from anything else in our cases, which is exactly why customers seek it out. John Hardy suits someone who wants fine jewelry with presence and personality rather than something delicate. It layers with everything and it wears daily.
