Gabriel & Co. is the work of two brothers, Jack and Dominick Gabriel, who grew up around jewelry making and started the company in New York in 1979. Their father was a jeweler, and the brothers learned the bench before they learned the business, which is a background that tends to show in the finished product. One brother took design, the other took operations, and that split has held for more than four decades.

What the brand became known for is intricate hand-finished metalwork: filigree, milgrain, engraved galleries, and detail applied to the sides and undersides of rings rather than only the top.
