So, if you're ready to dive into the timeless and ancient world of custom jewelry design, then let's begin our journey. First things first, let's break down what exactly custom jewelry is and why it has such a timeless appeal. Custom jewelry design has a rich and fascinating history that stretches back to ancient civilizations. From the intricate adornments of the Egyptians to the symbolic motifs of the Greeks and Romans, jewelry has always held a special place in human culture. Then came the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries brought about a renaissance in custom jewelry design. Characterized by innovative artistic styles and geometric patterns, these movements revolutionized the concept of wearable art. These influential cultures and traditions have shaped and broadened my perspectives of my own jewelry designs, from the craftsmanship of the Renaissance to the modern innovations in technology that are revolutionizing the industry all come together to create our unique and timeless designs.Defining Custom Jewelry
Custom jewelry is like the VIP section of the jewelry world. It's all about creating one-of-a-kind pieces tailored to your unique style and preferences that are as individual as you are. We can only accomplish this by getting to know our guests and learning about not only their style preferences but personality and lifestyles. To create a design for someone it must also be practical for their lifestyle, as a ring for example that needs to be worn every day. We always tell my guests that custom jewelry is not just adornment but can be in honor of forever lasting memories of times in their life. As an example, it can be a diamond passed down from their beloved grandmother who has long since passed. It could also be reimagining a wedding set so that can reflect the changes and growth of their relationship over time. Custom design jewelry is endless in its possibilities to touch the heart of someone you love or simply celebrate life itself with family and friends.
The Appeal of Custom Designs
Why has custom design jewelry been so timeless? Well let's begin with this thought. If you could purchase a car within your budget and dictate every single aspect of the car exactly how you wish it to be would you not do it? One of the appeals lies in owning a piece of jewelry that tells your story and reflects your style where factory production pieces often fall short, as they are made for the masses. The appeal of picking the perfect diamond or gemstones to designing a piece that is uniquely you is timeless as a moment you never forget. Custom design is a means of expressing your individuality and capturing moments that are meaningful to you.The Creative Process of Custom Jewelry
Let us now discuss how we begin creating custom jewelry which is in itself a journey that involves collaboration, vision, artistic execution, craftsmanship and most of all your vision. Let's break it down step by step.Consultation and Design Concept
It all starts when we sit down to discuss your vision, inspirations and preferences. We will ask various questions but mostly listen as you explain your vision. The very first thing we offer to our guests is a custom design that is never repeated. A design that has multiple productions is not a custom piece. It's important from the very beginning of our conversations for our guests to have full clarity of our commitment to giving them an experience and custom design that is unique as they are. There are often times when the guest doesn't know what they are in search of and this is where we help guide them to discovery through discussions, pictures of styles they enjoy and what they do not. We show the guest different examples of styles from different time periods and of course get to know the guest so that we can better understand. Sometimes it's very quick to discover the guest vision and sometimes it takes a few meetings, but the process is never hurried or forced. Beautiful designs don't come from sales pressure or as the designer forcing my visions, but with patience and listening. As you can clearly see, getting to know your tastes and preferences is like solving a puzzle. Are you into vintage or modern minimalism? Do you prefer delicate pieces or bold statement jewelry? By asking the right questions and paying attention to details in our conversations, we can create a piece that truly speaks to your individuality.
Once the concepts are discovered that is when we begin to explore them through the art and design process. This can take a week or so and the level of the art work in realism depends on the concepts. As an example, a contemporary design is more about the diamonds and arrangements where the vintage piece needs more realistic art to show the filigree and movement.
Diamonds and Gemstones
There are times when the center diamond or gemstone is already selected before they visit us. There are also times when through the design process we discover what the center stone or stones would most positively influence the overall design. Not all custom jewelry has diamonds or gemstones, so the focus is on the design aspects or elements. We always encourage our guests to explore the unsual when they are considering the stones for their designs. Custom jewelry design opens up a treasure trove of unique gemstones, from a color changing tourmaline to opals that dance with color to the deepest and rich colors of sapphires or rubies. In regards to diamonds, we encourage our guests to look beyond just round or princess cuts and explore some of the more cushions, ovals and emerald cuts. There is absolutely nothing wrong with round or princess cuts at all. It's more opening your mind to different perspectives to ensure we have explored all aspects of your design possibilities.Bringing the Vision to Life
Once the design and materials are finalized, it's time to create a realistic 3D CAD design and wax. The CAD design helps give you a visual representation that some people cannot see within the artwork itself. We then show a video in which we turn the jewelry and show every angle and perspective. However, this alone is not enough at times, so we always make a wearable wax model of the piece. This along with the CAD design entrusts that our guest clearly sees the custom piece in every possible light. We always make sure the guest is comfortable with what they're shown. If we need to make changes or adjustments, we do so as many times as needed.Manufacturing
The custom design process is a team effort, from the initial sales representative that brings the guest to me to the artisans that brings our designs to realization. The designs are then given to the production teams. Confirmation is given on type of metal, diamonds or gemstones supplied or sourced, size and all other details needed to produce the piece. These highly skilled craftsman and I work to gather through the process to ensure the guest vision is clearly explored and executed. Once the custom piece is ready it goes through a ridged quality control process to ensure it's the highest of quality. If the piece does not pass this inspection, it's re casted not manually corrected to meet the highest if standards. The Moment has Arrived
It is never fully possible to understand what your custom piece will be until you are holding it. The art, CAD designs and waxes can't prepare you for the realization of the custom piece. Time after time, our guests get emotional when they finally place the ring on their finger or put on that precious pendant. We are always so honored and humbled to be a part of this journey, whether it is a bridal set or honoring the memory of a loved one. Nothing gives us more happiness than these moments. This is the first of many blogs on the world of our custom jewelry design. We will cover how the art work, CADs and waxes are created to the actual manufacturing process. We will cover actual processes with our guests and many more aspects of custom jewelry design.
